Maybe I am just getting older, maybe my frontal lobe is finally forming and the dopamine that I once got as a kid from mobile games just isn’t there, but what the hell is going on with phone games.
Name one popular phone game that has come out within the last 3 years. You probably can't. Do kids even come up to people, breathe down their neck and ask if "you got games on your phone?" Because it has not happened to me in a long time. Do you guys remember Plauge inc.? That game rocked. I remember me and my classmates in the middle of class seeing who could destroy the earth first with a deadly disease. I did not enjoy playing this game in real life though in the spring and summer of 2020.
About once a month when I am tired of scrolling on my phone, I will load up the app store and see what new game is popular that I can download and play while I am bored at work or at home. I have not downloaded a game that was released in the last 3 years. I instead now go into my already purchased tab and scroll through until I find a game that I haven’t finished in a few years and play that instead. Most recently CSR Racing Classics, shout out the Plymouth Hemi Cuda, that puppy carried me all the way through Tier 4 with ease.
I think the newest game that I was consistently playing everyday and actually thought about when I was not on my phone was Retro Bowl. And do you know what Retro Bowl does really well? It keeps it simple. The gameplay is all pixels in 8-bit form which rocks, theres like 3 controls, and the simplicity continues to the user interface. If you look at games that have continued to progress with the times, you can see the transformation of simple touch and go game with smooth, easy graphics that are easy to follow along. Look at Clash of Clans for example. An absolute wagon of a game 10 years ago that everyone and their mother was playing. The game was so easy and satisfying to play. It didn’t lag, it did not require complicated finger movements to play, and best of all, you can easily play with your friends making it the ultimate bro game. You look at it now and theres like 4 different heroes, it takes 2 weeks for every upgrade past Town Hall 12, and there is pets? It is so much to keep up with it feels like a job. I just want a game I can pop into for like 15 - 30 minutes a day and play when I want to. I do not want to work to get my little dopamine boost.
Games like snake that you could play on a Nokia brick are 10x better than modern mobile games. I remember on road trips with the family I would run my dads Blackberry battery to the ground playing brick breaker. He was not happy when I would return his phone to him dead and he had a scheduled phone call in a few minutes.
